5 tips to help you stay cool as a cucumber this summer

March 24, 2024 by admin in Healthy Living

The heat we are seeing this summer is in no way good for our bodies or health. Yet we can’t just lock ourselves inside. Here are some expert recommended tips on how to stay cool this summer.

Summer is the time to arm ourselves with the ultimate guide to staying cool and revitalized. Say goodbye to sweaty discomfort and hello to a season of healthy habits to help you stay calm and cool. With the help of an expert, we’re about to tell you tips on how to stay cool in summer.

When the temperature rises and the heat becomes unbearable, it becomes essential to keep our bodies cool and hydrated. The season brings its own set of challenges, such as increased heat and weaker digestion. However, with a few simple strategies, we can stay cool and refreshed while enjoying the abundance of delicious and hydrating summer foods.

How to stay cool in summer?

Here are various techniques to beat the heat and make the most of the summer season as suggested by Dr Manoj Kutteri, an Ayurveda and nutrition expert:

1. Embrace seasonal eating

During summer, our bodies naturally crave foods that contain plenty of moisture and water. Incorporate watery fruits and vegetables like berries, cherries, tomatoes, peaches, and the beloved summer star—watermelon. “These refreshing options are low in calories, high in essential vitamins A and C, minerals like potassium, antioxidants like lycopene and beta-carotene, and have a high water content,” says Dr Kutteri. Enjoy them as snacks, main meals, or include them as delicious toppings in your dishes.

2. Prioritise hydration

Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining a healthy core temperature during summer. Consciously drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day. In addition to regular water intake, consider incorporating other hydrating beverages into your routine. Dr Kutteri suggests ‘nannari sharbat’ (Nannari sharbat is made from nannari root, also known as Indian sarsaparilla, and is popularly known for its cooling properties.) is an excellent replacement for carbonated drinks. Other options include celery or cucumber-infused water, buttermilk, coconut water, or barley water. These beverages not only quench your thirst but also help cool down your body.

3. Cooling pranayama

The doctor believes that Pranayama, or breathing exercises, can effectively expel body heat and promote overall well-being. During summer, practice cooling pranayama techniques such as sheetali and sheetkari pranayama, which help bring coolness to the body. Additionally, alternate nostril breathing can help balance energy and enhance relaxation.

4. Embrace cold showers

Having cold showers at least twice a day can provide instant relief from the summer heat. Consider taking refreshing cold showers to lower your body temperature and rejuvenate yourself. If possible, engage in water-based activities like swimming or water aerobics. These exercises provide the dual benefit of cardio workout and cooling off without putting excessive strain on your body.

5. Optimal clothing and ventilation

“Choosing appropriate clothing and ensuring proper ventilation in your surroundings play a significant role in keeping cool during summer,” says Dr Kutteri. Opt for loose, lightweight, and breathable fabrics like cotton, avoiding synthetic materials that trap heat. Stay indoors during the peak sunlight hours to minimize exposure to extreme heat. Ensure that your living space has adequate cross ventilation to promote air circulation. By adopting these practices, you can create a comfortable environment and reduce the risk of fatigue and heat-related discomfort.

Using these tips we can effectively beat the heat and enjoy the summer months to the fullest. Remember to listen to your body’s needs, stay mindful of your hydration levels, and make cooling practices a part of your daily routine. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and have a fantastic summer!
