Do Gym Injuries Increase in Winter? Expert Shares Key Insights on Cold Season Fitness Risks

January 27, 2025 by admin in Workouts

Dr Debashish Chanda, an orthopaedic expert, shares insights on why gym injuries may rise in winter and how to avoid them with proper preparation and technique.

As the winter season settles in, many fitness enthusiasts flock to the gym to burn off the extra calories from holiday indulgence or to start fresh with New Year’s fitness resolutions. However, with the cold weather, comes a concern: Do gym injuries increase in winter? According to Dr Debashish Chanda, Lead Consultant in Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement at CK Birla Hospital Gurugram, there are indeed some specific risks to consider during colder months, but with proper precautions, injuries can be minimised.

The Risk of Winter Workouts

“During winter, the muscles and joints tend to become stiffer,” says Dr Chanda. “When it’s cold, your body temperature drops, and as a result, your muscles lose their flexibility and flow. This can increase the risk of muscle strains, joint pain, and other injuries.”

The expert further explains that the cold weather makes it essential to warm up properly before starting any workout. “It is particularly important to stretch and warm up well during winter to ensure that your body is ready for the physical strain of exercise.” Dr Chanda points out that colder temperatures naturally make the muscles less flexible, so a thorough warm-up becomes crucial to prevent injuries like strains or sprains.

Changing Workout Routines

Another factor Dr Chanda highlights is that many people tend to change their workout routines during winter. “Some may begin intense exercises without properly preparing their body for the change in intensity,” he explains. “This sudden increase in activity level can overwhelm the muscles and joints, leading to injury.” For example, someone who is used to mild cardio may start lifting heavy weights or increase their intensity too quickly, increasing the risk of muscle and joint strain.

The Myth of Increased Injuries in Winter

While the risk of injury does increase in the winter due to these factors, Dr Chanda emphasises that “the season alone is not the main cause of injuries.” According to him, factors such as warm-up routines, exercise intensity, and technique play a more significant role in determining injury rates. “Injuries depend more on how well you prepare for the workout, how well you perform the exercises, and the equipment you use,” he says. Dr Chanda also notes that many gyms offer proper warm-up routines, professional fitness trainers, and good equipment, all of which help mitigate the risk of injuries.

Tips for Safer Winter Workouts

To stay safe and avoid injuries during your winter workouts, Dr Chanda advises the following:

  • Wear warm clothes: Keeping your body warm during workouts can help maintain muscle flexibility.
  • Warm-up and stretch properly: Take extra time to warm up and stretch before engaging in intense activity.
  • Increase intensity gradually: Avoid jumping into intense workouts without easing your body into the new routine.
  • Focus on proper technique: Proper form during exercises is key to preventing injuries, especially in cold weather.

While the risk of injury may increase in the winter, it is primarily due to improper preparation and technique. “If you take the time to wear warm clothes, stretch properly, and gradually increase your workout intensity, you can minimise the risk of injury, no matter the season,” concludes Dr Chanda.
