Part II: The Benefits of Tai Chi

March 13, 2023 by kevin in Mind & Body

Tai chi is a form of martial art that can lead to massive improvements in your mental and physical health. With its slow movements and strong focus on breathing and concentrating on coordination, it’s very accessible to people of most fitness levels.

This has made it popular for older people, as it can greatly improve their fitness and general mobility in later life. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t feel these benefits at any age, and you could actually benefit more from starting this at a younger age.

Have a look at a few more reasons as you how your mind and body can benefit from tai chi:

Improvement in Muscle Strength

Both your lower and upper body can gain strength from regular tai chi lessons. This may seem surprising because of the slow and deliberate nature of the movements, yet studies have shown evidence to support these claims.

Again, this study focused on older people, with an average age of 66. These people didn’t have high levels of fitness in any way, yet after 36 classes of tai chi over a course of 12 weeks, comparisons made between their upper and lower-body strength showcased improvements in both.
This also relates to the ability to move your upper and lower body more freely, causing improvements in flexibility too!

Stress

Now much of tai chi studies involve those that are older. This is understandable, as the health benefits gained from this can cause drastic improvement in their physical health. Those who are yet to suffer from problems in mobility, balance and flexibility can greatly improve their health too, with much of the best benefits coming as you age.

One benefit that is remarkable regardless of your age is the effect on stress. Let’s face it, no matter what age you are; you will be dealing with stress at one point or another in your life. And much like yoga, there are meditative components in tai chi, a lot based on controlling your breathing and focusing your mind on coordination of the body.

An inner calm and sense of peace can be achieved when doing this correctly, and anyone who has performed tai chi can testify as to just how great your mind is afterwards. This means that stress can be reduce by one simple class of tai chi, or by practicing a few moves at home.

The mind and body connection is very apparent with this martial art, and the way you can improve your fitness, mental health, and overall health make Tai Chi well worth trying at any age.
