Probably the worst feeling in the world is when you’re back home from work, dead tired, and no matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to fall asleep. Insomnia is a condition that affects millions of people around the globe, and if left untreated, it can have a serious impact on health.
While there are many different causes of insomnia, trying some simple yoga poses could be helpful, and could get you to fall asleep without much effort. Here are 5 of the best yoga poses that you should try if you’re up and you don’t like it.
The Bridge Pose
This pose may not sound like it may help you induce sleep, but give it a try and see how effective it is. Start by lying down on your back and placing the soles of your feet on the ground, bending your knees. Now inhale, press down on your feet and pull your torso upwards, keeping your hands flat and facing downwards. Hold this position for a couple of seconds and release- doing this often can relieve stress and calm you down, helping you sleep better.
The Corpse Pose
The corpse pose is probably the simplest, no fuss and most effective pose you can try. It involves the simple practice of lying down on the floor with your hands by your side and facing upwards- just like a corpse. The key to success with this pose is to focus on relaxing each and every muscle of your body and concentrating on every breath that you take. Practicing this on a daily basis will definitely help you fall asleep better.
Reclining Bound Angle Pose
This relaxation pose relieves any stress from your legs and can help you sleep better and more deeply. It has also been found to be particularly effective if you tend to have racing thoughts and a restless body when you try to sleep. Sit down such that the soles of both your feet touch each other. Now lean back, and using the support of both your arms, lie down on the floor. Once you’ve attained this position, place your hands outwards and the palms facing upwards.
Seated Forward Bend
This pose has restorative action, and apart from helping you sleep better, it can also improve digestion. Sit down with your legs in front of you, and as you breathe in, raise your arms above your head. Now exhale and dive forward and grab your feet using your hands- its okay if you aren’t able to reach your feet, just attempt to move forward. Hold it for a few seconds and then release.
The Shoulder Stand
The shoulder stand is yet another simple pose that can help you relax and fall asleep better. Adopting this posture can relieve any foot soreness and calm down the mind. Start by lying down on your back and bringing your knees towards your chest. Now use your hands to push your torso upwards and your legs straight upwards. Make sure your neck and head do not move, and gently hold this posture for a couple of seconds.
