Choosing the Best Mind-Body Therapy

April 09, 2023 by kevin in Mind & Body

Selecting a mind and body treatment can be difficult, and that’s the reason you need to do some research before making a choice. This helps you in identifying the practice which is best for you. You have to ask yourself the following questions:

Why do you need therapy?
Do you wish to learn how to handle your stress, or you need to decrease the risk of getting a disease? Are you looking for ways to cope with the physical symptoms? Do you want to treat a particular disease? Or do you want to improve your general wellbeing? In case you already have a specific goal, consult your service provider to know which therapies he can recommend and then research on it for more information.

What is appealing?
Do you like painting, dancing, singing or exercising? Choose a therapy you will enjoy so that you can increase the chances of reaping and sustaining the benefits of the practice.

What is logistically realistic?
How much time can you spare to devote yourself to the practice? Are there some financial constraints? Do you know of an instructor in your community who can help you begin? Your commitment to the practice might evolve over time, but you have to base your original choice on what is realistic at this moment.

What intellectual, physical and spiritual characteristics must be considered?
Does art or music bring you some inner peace you can’t find elsewhere? Do you prefer settling down in a particular sitting position, or you wish to keep moving? Can you consider a spiritual approach? You need to think about your traits and then choose a therapy that will incorporate them. Note that these characteristics may change with time. Despite this, honor your present self and start your mind-body journey.

What is efficient and safe?
Generally, most mind-body therapies are safe. You need to remember that these therapies have an ever-expanding and productive research body supporting their efficiency. However, it is your duty to ensure that your routine is safe and effective, so tailor the therapy to suit your needs. For instance, in case you need a treatment that includes an intense physical component, you have to seek approval from your doctor and don’t overdo it. If you suffer from a personality disorder or depression, consult your therapist before you can do clinical hypnosis, meditation or guided imagery. If you are on medication, you will have to monitor yourself in order to determine how your practice reduces your need.
